How should I assess a 4th grade student who is reading on a 1st grade level?
Q. I am a student studying to be an elementary school teacher and I am currently in a Reading practicum class in a 4th grade elementary school classroom. I have a case study student who I need to assess (the teacher already told me she reads on a 1st grade level) but I need to assess her myself. Do you have any suggestions of tests I can give her? I have a Phonemic Awareness test and I also thought about doing a Yopp-Singer test as well. After I am done assessing her I need to formulate 8 lesson plans for her. I do not even know what to begin teaching her, even if her assessments come out poorly. Do I start with sight words? I would love an experienced teacher's help or a reading specialist to point me in a direction and show me some websites. [cont.]

How do you find grade level reading passages for 10th graders?
Q. I teach 10th Grade Intensive Reading in FL. These students did not pass the FCAT, but some are more than capable of grade level work. I need generic stories (meaning not from a textbook) to allow them to practice and demonstrate learning. I have seen some teachers with worksheet like stories (Nonfiction of course) but they say they don't know where they got them from because they are so old. I want to make workstations in order to differentiate learning. Tired of doing it the same old way.

A. I always hated reading stories that may be 'on grade level' but were really stupid. I mean, they had all of the elements- plot, climax, etc., but no one wants to read a souped up fifth grade story that tries to be 'cool' and ends with a really stupid moral. So I recommend going for something a little more classic. They have interesting stories for lots of reading levels. Plus-- they're short and free! Also, because they are classic other teachers have probably made lesson plans for them and posted them online. Of course, you could make your own lessons to suit the needs of your students. Good Luck!

What grade would I have to maintain in order to attend the University of Waterloo?
Q. As the title indicates, what exactly is the entrance requirement for a BC student to get accepted at the University of Waterloo grade wise? - I'm currently taking full academic courses during my grad year. - I won't specify the courses that I'm taking but in general it's revolved around science. - I've meet all the requirements to graduate. - My grade 12 course average is a high B+. I get the feeling that this won't quite be enough... What can I do to improve my chances of getting accepted?

A. To be completely accurate, you would need to know which program you are applying for, then you would be able to find out the specific program requirements on the prospective student website. First of all you need to find out what the program requirements are - that depends on what you plan on taking - then they will take the % average of the courses used for admission. For example, for Kinesiology, they will take the average of 6 academic subjects, which must include English 12, Math12, chem 12, and one of Bio12 or Physics 12. The other 2 subjects would be the 2 academic subjects that you have with the best marks. For Kinesiology they are looking for low 80 for regular admission and low - mid 80 for coop. In what grade in high school should I start applying for scholarship programs?
Q. I'm a freshman in high school and I'm starting to think about scholarships. I've heard that if you get really good grades and do extracurricular activities, the previous schools you went to will give you scholarship money (like your elementary school, high school). Is this true? When should I start applying for scholarship programs? Do I have to pay for anything? I heard that you should start applying in 11th grade.
Asked by Luv 311! - Thu Nov 22 21:17:25 2007 - Financial Aid - 3 Answers - Comments

A. You can start applying now, but you're off to a good start on clubs and grades. Most of the time a college is going to look at your last two years of high school. If you're paying someone to do a scholarship search then it's a rip off. Legit companies do scholarship searches for free. You shouldn't have to pay anything to apply for a scholarship either. Most of the time if you're eligible for the scholarship they want you to write a paper or send a creative video, etc. Good luck!

What grade would I need to get on my final to maintain an A in the class?
Q. I have a 94% right now in theatre. We're taking our 51 points final tomorrow, and I would really like to know what's the worst grade I could possibly get on the final to maintain an A in the class? I know it depends on the weight of the assignment, but generally, if you can help me figure it out, that'd be great! Thank you!
Asked by Mee - Thu Jan 28 20:18:36 2010 - Homework Help - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Take the grade you have now, multiply it by four, and then subtract it from 450 (If you want to keep an A). So, 94 x 4= 376. 450-376= 74. You'd need at least a 74% to keep your A. Here's the key: To keep an A = Subtract from 450 To keep a B = Subtract from 400 To keep a C = Subtract from 350 To keep a D= Subtract from 300 To keep a F= Subtract from 250

How do I properly grade the soil on the side of my garage?
Q. The soil on one side of my garage has settled and water seeps into the garage when it rains. I want to increase the grade of the soil but I don't know what % grade is best or what materials to use to increase the grade. Is 1 inch rise per horizontal foot sufficient or too much? Should the grade extend 6 feet from the garage wall or is that too much? Do I use dirt or rock or something else to form the grade?
Asked by Haus - Sun Oct 7 14:13:02 2007 - Maintenance & Repairs - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The best way to solve your problem is to dig a trench where the water is coming in. Line it with gravel, and lay that black plastic , flexible lateral line pipe (inexpensive) used with septic tanks, only in this case turn the holes UP. Cover that with several more inches of rock big enough not to fall inside the holes. Cover with dirt on a grade just enough to turn water, leaving the end of the lateral line exposed, in order to drain. If you coat the wall of the garage with tar while the ditch is dug, all the more better. This is standard repair procedure. If you just want to add dirt first, to try and turn the water, it will just be trial and error, and still might not work.

What grade should a person start thinking about college?
Q. What do you think is the appropriate grade for a person to start thinking what college he/she wants to go to, what career he/she wants to pursue etc? What grade are you supposed to know the periodical table?
Q. My science teacher said that we would be learning it in eighth grade, but I have always heard rumors that we would learn in seventh grade when I was living in Illinois. Does anyone know if I should start studying now so I won't be left behind later?

How to grade high school homeschool composition assignments?
Q. My child is in 11th grade and the emphasis this year in the curriculum we use for English is on composition. Now, I was never an English major so how should I grade the composition assignments? Is there any resources online, should I hire a tutor? Basically I need someone who will evaluate the compositions and give advice, correct errors, etc. I'm sure that I can do a satisfactory job in evaluating the papers for a grade but my child really enjoys writing and literature and wants to make sure that their compositions are the best that they can be.

What are the biggest differences between third grade and fourth grade?
Q. How do you feel about third graders being able to read at grade level before they are promoted to fourth grade? How can I pick up the pace my fourth grade curriculum when most of my students still don't know their multiplication facts? Only a few are reading to learn, while most are still learning to read. Do you believe if a student is retained in third grade, he/she is at greater risk of dropping out of high school? Please share your insights and advice about fourth graders. Thanks!

A. Reading is probably the single most important thing that grade school children need to be able to do with confidence. Reading well leads to comprehension of content - this leads to the beginning of critical thinking skills in later grades. Keeping a child back a year can be problematic, but not necessarily catastrophic at the third grade level. Some kids will do well because they may be less mature than their peers and can be more comfortable with younger kids - of course the opposite may true with the more mature kids. Consider what it is to be a child who does not read well. When I was in grammar school it was common practice for children to be asked to read aloud. The kids who could not read well dreaded this because they knew they were… [cont.]
