Grades are standardized measurements of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area. Grades can be assigned in letters (for example, A, B, C, D, or F), as a range (for example 4.0 - 1.0), as descriptors (excellent, great, satisfactory, needs improvement), in percentages, or, as is common in some post-secondary institutions, as a Grade Point Average (GPA). The GPA can be used by potential employers or further post-secondary institutions to assess and compare applicants. A Cumulative Grade Point Average is the mean GPA from all academic terms within a given academic year, whereas the GPA may only refer to one term.

History of grading

Keith Hoskin argues that the concept of grading students' work quantitatively was developed by a tutor named William Farish and first implemented by the University of Cambridge in 1792. Hoskin's assertion has been questioned by Christopher Stray, who finds the evidence for Farish as the inventor of the numerical mark to be unpersuasive. Stray's article elucidates the complex relationship between the mode of examination (testing), in this case oral or written, and the varying philosophies of education these modes imply, both to teacher and student. As a technology, grading both shapes and reflects many fundamental areas of educational theory and practice.

International grading systems

Most nations have individual grading systems unique to their own schools. However, several international standards for grading have arisen recently.

A. Tax is based on your income. In Texas there is no "state" income tax, at least there wasn't when I lived there. You would only pay federal taxes, which are a % of your income and the % goes up with the more money you make. Generally speaking you will pay about 20% federal tax. Federal taxes go to Washington DC - for our federal gov to blow on stupid stuff like a war that we shouldn't be in. Schools are funded at the local, not federal level. Tax dollars are used to pay for public school, which in Texas most likely comes from property tax. If you own a home, you pay property tax. If you rent a home you don't directly pay the property tax, the landlord does, you supply the funds to the landlord through your rent. Property tax is… [cont.]

I need to outline the steps required for a multicultural education to be effective. For a 2nd grade classroom?
Q. You are teaching language arts and social studies. Your classroom of 21 students consists of 7 white students, 5 Latino students, 4 African American students, 3 Native American students, and 2 Asian students. Four of your students are identified as special needs, with one in a wheelchair. A few of your students come from the poorest neighborhood . Describe types of activities you would incorporate into your classroom that would support a multicultural education for all groups in this class. How could each group make a contribution to the learning of others?

What happens when there are 40 special education students in twelfth grade who require a full time aide?
Q. There must be another way because I don't think the school can afford 40 aides for them. The school can refuse an aide as long as they are able to find another alternative. This is called budgeting!

A. This is one of the hard truths of education..there is a financial bottom line. If all the students have an IEP that state they must have a full time aide, the school will have to provide one. Now, if possible, they may see if there are ways to share an aide or combine the kids in some way, but it will depend on exactly what is called for in the IEP. If they do in fact all have to have a one-on-one, they will have one. However, keep in mind that most school systems feel that having a one on one in the higher grades can cause social issues, so may try to find other adaptations to make the child "blend" more. That will all depend on the child, the program, the parents and the issues at hand.
